THE AIM for this post is to share two announcements brought to us by friend of the newsletter, Dr. Bill Bellows. Long-time readers will know Bill is a friend of mine whom I credit with mentoring me into a deeper appreciation and understanding of Dr. Deming’s theory, and he is, I think, one of the few intellectuals today in the Deming community who aren’t content to refine the lessons of the past, but keeps advancing them into the future.
So, let’s dive in:
The In2:InThinking Network 2025 Forum
Bill is one of the founders of the In2:InThinking Network, a non-profit volunteer-led organization dedicated to sharing and advancing knowledge based on the teachings of Dr. Deming and his contemporaries.
In the past, they have held multi-day annual forums where attendees could learn about how the Deming philosophy was being applied, lessons learned, and new advances in his theory. After a brief hiatus, the forums returned last year and were such a success that another has been scheduled over 2.5 glorious days in Santa Clarita, CA this June 20-22. This year’s theme: Rethinking Efficiency and Exploring Effectiveness.
In-person registration is $310 USD which is incredible value-for-money:
Can’t make the trip? No worries: they will also have live-stream options for remote participants. Bill tells me that they are expecting almost as many people online as on-site for the 2025 forum, which is incredible!
NB: Bill has invited me to present a “Deming 101” talk about my own journey to Deming, from frustrated software developer and agile consultant to what led to the creation of this newsletter, and more. My talk will be live-streamed and later uploaded to the forum’s YouTube channel.
Tim Higgins’ New Economics Study Group
One of Bill’s long-time colleagues and friend, Tim Higgins, is starting a new run of his well-known and beloved review of The New Economics over the course of eight weekly, 1.5h sessions where participants deep-dive into the meaning and application of the ideas Dr. Deming introduces in his book. Tim augments this with additional learning materials and videos to aid in learning.
There’s NO FEE for this, nor any pre-requisites: all are welcome!
NB: Today is the first session, with the final one coinciding with the 2025 In2:InThinking Forum.
Get Involved!
Events like the In2:InThinking forums and Tim Higgins’ New Economics study groups are fantastic ways to expand your understanding and appreciation of Dr. Deming’s theory and philosophy by hearing the perspectives of others who share the same passion for the material, and in many cases have applied the thinking in real-world scenarios. By getting involved, you’ll meet and interact with many interesting people who are all, in their own way, looking to advance the joy in learning and work that Deming first taught in the 1980s, but now in the 2020s.
I highly encourage you to consider registering for both of these events!
